O N E I R I C wine estate — pronounced “Oh‑ne‑rik,” from the Greek for “dream” — is precisely that: a hidden gem tucked into the cool‑climate Elgin Valley.

Leaving Rhodesia in the early 1980s with little more than the clothes on their backs, Matt Pascall carried a quiet dream of owning a farm. When Matt bought a 64-hectare property in Elgin in 2007, he called Benn Gunn of Iona to help harvest the fruit, make the wines and store the bottles. Matt did not anticipated how much eight hectares of vines could yield in bottle.

Three years into the arrangement, Matt’s eldest daughter, Shan Pascall, called Benn to ask how much wine her father had drunk. When she learned he’d consumed 500 bottles over that period, she was reassured the wines were being enjoyed at a reasonable pace. But on discovering that 95,000 bottles were languishing in storage, Shan moved to the Cape to help her father bring the stock to market.

Matt’s work in copper mining inspired a copper theme across the labels, with each varietal referencing a different copper derivative or sulphide. The typeface was conceived by Jennifer, Shan’s mother and the homestead illustration was sketched by Shan’s brother, Blaize, an award‑winning photographer whose work features throughout the Oneiric website and social channels. The Oneiric label is truly a family affair.

In late November 2012 the Pascalls unveiled the Oneiric range in Cape Town to enthusiastic acclaim. Michael Fridjon, South Africa’s leading wine writer, taster and judge, visited the stand and left with a smile: “I like you guys — you’re fresh!”

Thanks to Matt’s slow drinking all the wines have some age to them, ensuring our clients get to enjoy wines that have been aged in the optimum conditions and sold at prices that are palatable. This is rare—wines of this quality and age often end up at auctions with inflated prices.
